In winter, the Norwegian coast takes on an extra dimension: the Northern Lights, one of the most extraordinary natural phenomena on Earth. With the Noorderlicht, you'll seek out places and harbors free from light pollution, providing you with the best chances to see the Northern Lights in all their glory. Another phenomenon during the Norwegian winter is the numerous sightings of whales. The coastal waters are home to sperm whales, orcas, humpback whales, pilot whales, and dolphins. Nowhere else in the world are such extensive schools of whales observed as in Northern Norway.
The enchanting Northern Lights, the picturesque Lofoten Islands and the presence of extensive whale populations are the focal points of this winter expedition. Minor itinerary adjustments may be made to ensure optimal viewing of these natural wonders. Combined with the pristine wilderness of the Arctic Ocean, this journey guarantees an unforgettable experience for you!

Our journey begins in Bergen, the second-largest city in Norway and the gateway to the fjords. Around Bergen, there are some of the most beautiful fjords, like the Nærøyfjord, the Sognefjord and the Geirangerfjord. Next to that it’s fantastic to stroll through Bergen’s historic and UNESCO-listed wharf district, the colorful Bryggen.

In Ålesund you can admire Art Nouveau architecture and Atlanterhavsparken, one of the largest saltwater aquariums in Northern Europe.
Trondheim, currently Norway's third-largest city, it’s a captivating blend of medieval and modern. A must-visit attraction in the city is Nidaros Cathedral, often referred to as "Norway's Notre Dame" due to its Gothic style. It holds the distinction of being the most sacred building in the country. Close by, the Gamle Bybro, an old city bridge spanning the Nid River, serves as the gateway to the historic Hanseatic district of Bakklandet. The neighborhood features charming wooden wharves along the riverbank, now home to trendy eateries.

Bodø, overlooked by the Børvass peaks. Admire the fabulous street art or enjoy a scenic hike through the mountains.
Svolvaer. As the ship enters the Lofoten archipelago, the 1,000-meter-high ‘Lofoten Wall’ becomes a breathtaking sight on the horizon! The Lofoten Islands are famous for its dramatic peaks.
Once you spot rows of traditional fisherman's huts on stilts, known as "rorbuer," you'll know you've reached the charming harbor of Svolvær, the main town of the Lofoten Islands.
You’ll then cross the Arctic Circle and enter the realm of winter’s Northern Lights heading towards Tromsø, also known as the Arctic Capital.

Tromsø is situated on a large island and surrounded by mountains. It’s the largest city in Northern Norway and undoubtedly one of the best places in the world to witness the northern lights.
The city is also often called the "Paris of the North", due to its highly creative culinary scene. Tromsø's multicultural community brings a variety of international cuisines and thanks to its coastal location, you can enjoy fresh fish straight from the ocean.

Landings are subject to site availabilities, permissions, and environmental concerns per AECO regulations. Official sailing plans and landing slots are scheduled with AECO prior to the start of the season, but the expedition leader determines the final plan. Flexibility is paramount for expedition cruises.

With over 30 years of sailing in Spitsbergen and Nothern Norway Tall Ship Noorderlicht has built a reputation as the most famous Tall Ship in Spitsbergen. The ship is equipped with one goal: accommodating adventurers during their expeditions to Spitsbergen and Northern Norway. Because of her shallow draft she is able to navigate through the least visited fjords. She offers room for 20 guests and is therefore the perfect vessel for forming new friendships. If you wish to learn a thing or two about sailing a Tall Ship, you are invited to give the crew a hand.
